About KAYA
KAYA is a new organisation coming to life in Q1 2023. It is being co-founded by purpose-driven professionals with different cultural backgrounds and with several years of experience in nature conservation, clean energy, rural development, real estate, and e-commerce. KAYA’s vision is to mitigate climate change by working with nature. In doing so, it also aspires to support the impacted communities and societies in accessing new livelihoods and becoming more resilient. KAYA’s mission is to develop multi-year landscape-scale conservation and restoration projects in terrestrial ecosystems. It will bring the developed projects upon maturity to the market for payments for their ecosystem services.
About this role
This is a scientific role in the Climate Office at KAYA in which the responsible colleague will analyse and interpret the greenhouse gas fluxes in the land areas where the landscape-scale forestry, agriculture and grassland projects are being developed. The work would involve calculating the emissions and sequestration based on field data on one hand and peer-reviewed scientific models and databases on the other. They will work closely with the Landscape Specialists, Earth Observation Specialist, and Project Development Manager.
Responsibilities
- Calculate carbon stock and GHG emissions in the baseline conditions reported together with forestry, agriculture, and earth observation specialists.
- Model net GHG fluxes based on land management and land-development plans proposed by forestry and agriculture specialists
- Calculate carbon stock and GHG emissions in the decided project progression cycles
- Support project development manager(s) in developing project documents compliant to certification standards and programs
Requirements
- Strong understanding of one or more AFOLU-based GHG accounting methodologies from IPCC, SBTi, Clean Development Mechanism, Verified Carbon Standard, Gold Standard, and Plan Vivo Standard
- Over three years of experience in net GHG accounting in multi-year forestry, agriculture, or grassland development projects with the potential to show samples of work done
- Willingness to live and work in Berlin
- Willingness to commit to at least an 80% (32-hours) role
- Willingness to travel overseas for work, especially to sub–Saharan Africa
- Openness to co-creating structures, processes and culture at a start-up while being patient through the developmental phase
- Possibility to contact former employers
- In addition to English fluency, languages desired are French, Portuguese, and/or Spanish
- Education in forestry, agricultural science, landscape management, mathematics, or statistics is desirable
- Knowledge of relevant scientific programs and modelling tools is desirable
