What We Do

implementing
nature-based solutions

At KAYA, we’re fully-focused on implementing nature-based solutions that maximise impact on climate, biodiversity, and local communities over an area of Angola potentially reaching over 500,000 hectares. We are engaged in reforestation, agroforestry, and fire management interventions, with ongoing assessment of environmental, social, and economic factors to ensure our work is appropriate, effective, and sustainable.

Every project is developed in partnership with local communities, ensuring sustainability and profitability so that benefits are shared. Designed for landscape-scale, long-term impact, our initiatives span decades, with a seamless transition plan to create lasting positive change. Our projects adhere to rigorous verification and certification processes, following methodologies approved by regulatory bodies.

environmental restoration

AGROFORESTRY

Agroforestry is a vital strategy for environmental restoration, climate resilience, and socio-economic development in Angola. It can increase sustainability and diversify production of farms, improving income and resilience for farmers and local communities

By promoting sustainable agricultural practices that integrate trees with crops and livestock, we can help Angola address pressing issues like deforestation, land degradation, climate change, and poverty, ultimately enhancing the wellbeing of rural communities and protecting natural resources for future generations.

carbon sequestration

REFORESTATION

Reforestation projects contribute to carbon sequestration, supporting Angola’s commitments to climate change mitigation under the Paris Agreement. Angola has a critical need for reforestation projects due to widespread deforestation, land degradation, and climate vulnerability.

REFORESTATION-V1

The country has lost significant forest cover due to unsustainable agriculture, logging, charcoal production, and infrastructure expansion. This deforestation threatens biodiversity, particularly in ecosystems like the Miombo woodlands, which support diverse wildlife and local livelihoods.

We’re looking to pioneer landscape restoration in Malanje, Angola, with native tree species, initiating the seed sourcing process and establishing trials at the KAYA Lab.

wildfires & controlled burning practices

FIRE MANAGEMENT

Angola’s need for fire management projects is urgent due to the country’s vulnerability to both wildfires and controlled burning practices, which have significant environmental, economic, and social consequences.

Fire management can help to ensure the success and sustainability of our agroforestry and reforestation projects.

ANGOLA

We have identified Angola as a country with enormous potential for landscape-scale, nature-based solutions projects.

ANGOLA'S CLIMATE THREAT

The need for climate change adaptation and mitigation is great. Between 1960 and 2006, Angola saw an average annual temperature increase of 1.5°C, and a 2mm decrease in annual precipitation.

Between 2005 and 2017, climate-related disasters cost Angola nearly US$1.2 billion, with droughts alone impacting around a million people in the country each year on average.

Many people rely on natural resources which are under threat. Population growth, hunting, frequent fires & charcoal burning threaten biodiversity. And, between 2001 and 2023, 7.1% of Angolan trees were felled.

We are working closely with the Angolan government to determine the need, to access important historical data, and to gain permission to perform our work where it’s needed most. We aim to help the country adapt to carbon markets, promoting the growth toward a low carbon economy.

Angola stands to suffer greatly from the effects of climate change, and has set out ambitious targets to adapt to and mitigate its impact – and we want to help them achieve these targets.

THE KAYA LAB

The KAYA Lab is a research and development hub for our future projects in Angola.

It also serves as a knowledge sharing facility between KAYA and rural communities in the Malanje region. It’s here we rigorously test theoretical frameworks and practical methodologies over 200+ hectares to eventually scale across other regions of Angola.

HOW WE WORK

A holistic
approach

A holistic approach to project development in nature-based solutions (NbS) involves considering the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic factors in the process of planning, implementation, and monitoring. It goes beyond focusing solely on the ecological outcomes, such as carbon sequestration or biodiversity conservation, to include the well-being and resilience of local communities, the long-term sustainability of the project, and its broader environmental impact.

This approach ensures that KAYA is not only effective in addressing climate change but it can generate additional benefits including improved livelihoods, enhanced ecosystem services, and community empowerment, while also maintaining a strong focus on governance and accountability.

Our approach to the conservation and restoration of natural ecosystems is driven by our passion, motivation, and vision for a greener, more prosperous world. Read all about our mission statement:
