KAYA in Angola: Supporting The UN Sustainable Development Goals 🌳

Ten years ago, the UN established the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to help create a better world by 2030. Today, only 17% of the Global Goals are on track, making it extra critical that KAYA’s Nature-based Solutions projects contribute towards achieving these economic, social and environmental targets.

Here are just some of the ways that our reforestation and agroforestry projects in Angola will do this.

Today, only 17% of the Global Goals are on track, making it extra critical that KAYA’s Nature-based Solutions projects contribute towards achieving these economic, social and environmental targets.

Here are just some of the ways that our reforestation and agroforestry projects in Angola will do this.

🥘 No Poverty

We will:

➡ Create employment opportunities in planting, growing, monitoring and agroforestry schemes, reducing reliance on subsistence farming and improve resilience;

➡ Boost community and employee skills through training programmes, helping to improve their long-term employability; and

➡ Provide equipment and infrastructure to benefit vulnerable and marginalised groups, supporting those most at risk of falling into poverty.

🥗 Zero Hunger

We will:

➡ Provide better access to markets for small-scale farmers and local communities through diversified crops for food sources, and forest products

➡ Enhance sustainable food systems, promoting agricultural practices that are resilient to climate change, droughts, floods, and other disasters; and

➡ Support rural infrastructure, research, and technology to boost agricultural productivity

📈Decent Work and Economic Growth

We will:

➡ Create direct and indirect employment opportunities, both during the project and in the long-term; and

➡ Acknowledge the root cause and drivers of unsustainable economic activity (such as charcoal production) and provide insight and evidence to shift to sustainable practices. This will ensure a decent living for the local communities while restoring ecosystem services and biodiversity.

🌍Climate Action

We will:

➡ Support climate change mitigation and adaptation by reducing the pressure on the ecosystem and restoring large areas of forest;

➡ Employ a holistic approach to sustainability that integrates social, economic, and cultural elements for resilience;

➡ Bring climate finance to fast-track the potential for a more resilient landscape; and

➡ Work with academic and technical partners to develop best practices and share learnings with others.

🌱 Life on Land

We will:

➡ Produce seeds from different provenances to supply KAYA’s own reforestation programmes and act as a trusted supplier for others;

➡ Ensure selected species are native and support people economically, alongside their value to biodiversity;

➡ Restore or conserve over 500,000 hectares over a period of up to 30 years; and

➡ Introduce sustainable land management practices such as fire control and soil conservation measures.

🤝 Partnerships for the Goals

At KAYA, we are committed to a holistic approach built on recognised standards and the highest levels of integrity. Our work is founded on three interconnected pillars: climate, biodiversity, and communities – recognising that lasting impact for one is only possible when all three are strengthened together. Through this approach, we aim to turn the UN Sustainable Development Goals into action, creating meaningful and sustainable change along the way.
